The phrase “Coats 4 Kids” is a familiar one, often heard on the radio or seen on flyers during the colder months. This beloved initiative, led by churches, nonprofits, businesses, and individuals, has become a cherished American pastime across the country.
What may surprise you is that there isn’t a national Coats 4 Kids organization with a trademark or central headquarters. While some local coat drives operate on a statewide level, the majority are grassroots efforts run by dedicated volunteers who embrace the spirit of this initiative.
In Bonner and Kootenai County, local real estate agent Karen Battenschlag has spearheaded the Coats 4 Kids initiative for 11 years, with strong support from News 4 Now/KXLY News, which provides a regional platform for both counties. They assist with logistics, including boxes, bags, posters, and extensive advertising during nightly weather broadcasts. Karen coordinates efforts between Bonner and Kootenai counties through her affiliation with Tomlinson Sotheby’s, where she also serves as a realtor. This partnership continues because Coats 4 Kids remains one of their favorite charities.
Over the years, Coats 4 Kids has evolved. In the past, donation bins were placed in every school, and distributions took place at Bonner Mall. However, following the Covid-19 pandemic, the process has become more streamlined. Now, Karen, along with a dedicated team of volunteers and sponsors, processes thousands of new and gently used coats each winter, dedicating countless hours to washing, mending, storing, and delivering coats to those in need.
“Someone has got to keep it going,” Karen explains. “I’ve simplified the process over the years, and I’m grateful for the strong support we receive.”
Coats 4 Kids relies on the generosity of our community to provide warmth for individuals of all ages, from babies to adults. While the initiative is known for helping children, Karen emphasizes the need for coats for everyone, ensuring that no one is left out in the cold. Donations—both monetary contributions and gently used coats—are crucial for keeping this program thriving. Every coat, regardless of size, makes a difference and helps Coats 4 Kids meet the diverse needs of our community. As temperatures drop, we encourage everyone to consider donating to this important cause, ensuring that warmth and comfort are accessible to all who need it. Your support can truly change lives this winter!
This year, collection points are more limited, and local food banks will handle coat distributions instead of setting up at the mall. Our local sponsors include Alsco, Fred’s Appliance, Goodwill, Papa Murphy’s, and Spokane Teachers Credit Union (STCU). Donations are being accepted at various locations in Bonner County, including Papa Murphy’s, Goodwill, STCU, the Selkirk Association of Realtors, and Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty. Remember to donate coats for babies and adults as well!
Distribution will begin in November at the Bonner County Community Food Bank. No questions will be asked about financial situations; anyone in need can come and take a coat.
“This is a simple charity that’s easy to understand and easy to donate to,” says Karen. “In addition to donations, we’re always looking for help with pick-ups.”
