Approximately 20-30 major international child sponsorship organizations operate around the world. You might recognize some of these prominent charities, such as World Vision, from their commercials. However, one of these organizations is headquartered right in our own backyard. Did you know that, while much of its work takes place in California, there is a child sponsorship nonprofit actually headquartered right here in Bonner County?
Promise Child is a non-denominational Christian nonprofit organization dedicated to making disciples and empowering local leaders to teach and lead within their own communities. Their mission is rooted in 2 Timothy 2:2 and John 8:31, which highlight the importance of faithfulness in teaching and adhering to the teachings of Christ.
Founders Journey
Pastor Brent Kaser is the founder of Promise Child though he was hardly a pastor when the organization was founded. His remarkable transformation from a prospective millionaire to a dedicated minister is a powerful testament to the influence of faith and conviction. His early adult life revolved around corporate success but his perspective shifted dramatically after his conversion to Christianity.
"Before I came to Christ, I genuinely looked down on those who were poor or unsuccessful," Pastor Brent reflects.
But when Pastor Brent embraced his faith, he made a complete 180-degree turn. He left the rat race and dedicated himself to spreading the Gospel, initially focusing on ministering to the homeless—people he once overlooked. He found fulfillment in local ministry and had no initial vision for a broader impact. However, as he became more involved, someone challenged him to consider expanding his efforts on a global scale.
"All I knew was that global missionaries hacked through the jungle with machetes and faced dangerous situations, and I wanted no part in that," Pastor Brent laughs, recalling his initial reluctance.
Eventually, someone persuaded Pastor Brent to take an evangelistic trip to Nepal, and it was a transformative experience for him. Convicted by the journey and inspired by Matthew 28:19—"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"—Pastor Brent felt a calling to expand his mission and Promise Child was born.

Effective Sponsorship Model
Promise Child’s model is straightforward: sponsors contribute $15 per month to support a child, and Promise Child ensures that 100% of this amount goes directly to the child's needs. The organization covers its own travel, living, and operational expenses separately from the sponsorship funds. Thanks to donations to a general fund and an overhead average of just 4%, donors can be assured that their contributions have a significant impact.
In addition to its gospel-centered mission, Promise Child distinguishes itself in several ways. The organization employs over 100 native ministry workers, fostering a deeper connection with the communities they serve. By supporting local leaders, Promise Child bridges cultural and language gaps, enabling more effective outreach and personal interaction with each sponsored child. This approach ensures that the program is not a “white savior” initiative but rather a community-driven effort focused on empowering everyone involved through skill development and education.
Innovative Partnership
For those concerned about how scripture is shared with individuals who may not be literate in their own language, Promise Child partners with Faith Comes by Hearing (FCBH). Through FCBH's “Vision 2033,” and in collaboration with other like-minded nonprofits, Promise Child is committed to providing God’s Word in audio format, aiming to have the Bible available in every language by 2033.
From humble beginnings to far-reaching influence across the world, this organization demonstrates how personal transformation and commitment to a higher purpose can drive meaningful change. By focusing on empowering local leaders and ensuring that every dollar donated directly supports the children in need, Promise Child upholds the principles of integrity and effectiveness in its mission. With innovative partnerships like those with FCBH, Promise Child is not only providing essential support to children but also fostering a more inclusive and accessible dissemination of faith. As Promise Child continues to grow and expand its reach, it remains a testament to the power of local efforts making a global impact, inspiring others to look beyond their own boundaries and contribute to a brighter, more connected world.
