The Angels Over Sandpoint’s 22nd annual Back 2 School Backpack is back! The program is funded by targeted fundraising campaigns and supported by the annual AOS golf tournament and raucous Follies variety show events. What began with the modest goal of providing backpacks and school supplies to 20 children in need has grown significantly, and now serves nearly 1,000 children annually, with a target of reaching 1,500 backpacks this year.
The success of the Back 2 School program relies heavily on collaborative partnerships with local businesses and organizations. Staples in Ponderay, a key partner, has played a pivotal role by providing quality supplies that meet children’s preferences and needs, ensuring they don’t feel left out with lower-quality, off-brand items. Additionally, a strong partnership with the Lake Pend Oreille School District has resulted in a streamlined approach to getting lists of the required school supplies, grade level by grade level, so that getting the right supplies to the right kids is easier and more effective.

“Watching the kids light up when they choose a backpack they like is such a great feeling,” glowed Chelsey McQuoid, the new coordinator of Angels over Sandpoint’s (AOS) Back 2 School backpack program. “Last year, a little girl personally thanked me…the water works began, and it wasn’t her crying.”
A member of Angels Over Sandpoint since 2023, Chelsey also serves on the board of the EnVision Center. “I joined Angels and am on the board of the EnVision Center because I wanted to make a meaningful impact in the community,” she reflected. Although Chelsey grew up in North Seattle, her roots extend deep into Bonner County, where her extended family has resided since the 1960s. Since relocating here in 2021, Chelsey has been dedicated to giving back to the community, balancing her responsibilities with running the training program at Kaniksu Community Health.
While fundraising efforts are crucial, the Back 2 School program's second greatest need is for volunteers. They play an essential role in assembling backpacks the week before the event and assisting during distribution at various locations across Bonner County. Locations include Sandpoint, Sagle, Clark Fork, and Priest River. For more information on how to register click “Need Help?” on the AOS web page.
If you’re passionate about supporting local students and ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed, consider getting involved with the Back 2 School program. Whether through volunteering your time, making a donation, or spreading the word, your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of Bonner County children.
